Mercury Displament Relays/Contactors, MDRs![]() Mercury Displacement Contactors/Relays (MDRs)
Mercury displacement relays (MDRs) are used as high-current switches or contactors, where contact erosion from constant cycling would be a problem for conventional relay contacts. The contacts of a standard mercury displacement relay or contactor consist of a metal electrode and a pool of mercury that gets displaced by the plunger assembly, thereby coming in contact with the metal electrode during operation .
Mercury displacement contactors have several advantages over mechanical contactors. They provide superiorperformance and reliability for longer life and durability. They are more compact in size for easy installation. They have lower, predictable contact resistance. They can handle a variety of loads for increased design flexibility. They have lower coil power requirements. They have minimal derating due to higher ambient temperatures.Mercury displacement contactors provide a clean make and break with no chatter and little erosion. Mercury Displacement Relays, Contactors or Switches as they are often called are hermetically sealed with high quality glass to metal seals. ![]() Mercury Displacement Relays (MDRs) and Power Controllers (SCR's) are used in a wide variety of applications throughout industry.
